Can you help me translate these phrases for a novel I am writing?  » answer
by Latila, 2018-06-30, 03:40  like dislike  Spam?  24.19.168....
Hello, I’m writing a novel set in ancient times. My main character is hunting a legendary beast called the “winter stag” or “stag of winter” in the area that I can vaguely describe as “Northern Poland” - basically this creature is on the very outskirts of a very cold region at the edge of the Baltic Sea. My character has theoretically picked up on a few words from the Polish language so she can communicate with the peoples residing here. What would be the proper Polish phrase for a “winter stag” or “stag of winter”? Also, what would be the phrase for “dream hunter” or “hunter of dreams”?

Thank you

I am sorry that I cannot help you with these terms. I am not even entirely sure what you mean in English. I would, however, warn you that it is a hazardous enterprise to write about an environment and period and culture about which you know very little. You risk making yourself look ridiculous to people who do know something of the setting.

Hi Catesse

To be clear, I am not writing a novel set in ancient Poland. I just needed a couple of terms translated for two quick scenes in which my character is in the wilderness in that area. I understand I know very little about ancient Polish culture or language, and I wouldn’t want to do anything to disrespect that culture. which is why I came onto this forum. To give more context about the scene I am writing, my character is just hunting in the woods for the entirety of the portion that she’s in Poland.

Thanks for trying,

Latila

Good luck with your project. I gav more thought to trying to help you with the translations, but my Polish is not good enough. It is likely that my efforts would end up sounding ridiculous.

Try typing "Polish wedding vows" into Google. You will find quite a few variants. Remember that in Poland civil registration is compulsory. Anything else is optional.

What does pokrzywniku mean? » answer
by Baynie, 2017-11-27, 15:50  like dislike  Spam?  86.202.221...
Hi,

In the first book of the Witcher, one character insults Geralt, saying:

" Słyszysz, co mówię, pokrzywniku?"

The english version of the book translates this in:

"Do you hear me, you bastard?"

But what does "pokrzywniku" really mean? When I use google translate, "pokrzywniku" and "bastard" don't match at all.

The basic form, nominative case, is "pokrzywnik", which means "tortoiseshell". I don't know what it implies as a term of abuse. Maybe somebody who is a bit dense, thick, stupid?

I found that an old meaning of the word "pokrzywnik" is bastard in that german-polish word-book.

https://books.google.fr/books?id=D1JKAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA586&lpg=...

So the english translation is good. The word pokrzywnik is used in its old meaning beacause it is a middle-aged fantasy world.

Hi,

I remeber when I lived in Germany I knew a Polish woman with two daughters who always said something like 'hodge!' to them, which was something to do with hurry up.

I can't find this in the dictionary here. Can anyone tell me what she was saying and if it means what I think?

Generally, you leave people's names as close to the original as possible. That would mean simply a change to "Lodziana". (Or possibly "Lodzian".)
Why would you want to do more than that?

Catesse - I think you settled it for me in that "Łodz" and "Łódź" are identical and that Łódźian means an inhabitant of Łódź.  I've learned that inhabitants of Łódź call themselves "the boat people".  With that, Boatperson doesn't make any sense as a surname - Boatman is damn near perfect :)  As thanks, I'll tell my descendants that you named us!
